History of the FCC

Late in the 1940’s folks in Fredenberg were burdened for a place to worship. Much prayer and planning preceded the first service held at the old Fredenberg Town Hall. The first families to attend these services were Leo Forseth, Ben and Dee Pearson, Cris Johnsen, John and Jenny Nickelson and Lief Olson.

By 1950 a church building was under way on land donated by Minnesota Power and Light. The building started with a basement that had a waterproofed ceiling and services were then held in this building. After construction was complete the congregation could not afford a pastor. Rev. Graden Grobe and ministerial students provided Sunday messages and Sunday school was conducted regularly.

In 1960 the little church was struck by lightning and it burned to the ground. The faithful congregation met in the Fredenberg School (now the community center) while plans and construction, much by the congregation, were underway for a new church. The little church is still standing today it serves as our Youth Center.

Village Missions provided a succession of part time pastors including - Marlow Magnes & Graden Grobe until 1974 when the congregation called Rev. Tim Johnson to become our full time pastor. Noble Trygg donated land on the Pioneer Road and a parsonage was built. Several years later Pastor Johnson suffered a brain tumor and was succeeded in the pulpit by Pastor Steve White 1979 , Pastor John James 1984.

By 1982 the need for an enlarged or new church was becoming apparent. Attendance on Sunday mornings was over 200 and Sunday School was very crowded. In 1983 surveys and planning sessions for the present church building were conducted and a building fund was established.

In the late 1980’s construction by contractors and volunteers began. After the building was framed people of the church worked faithfully day and night towards the church’s completion in 1993. Debt Free! Pastor Llyod Mattson guided our congregation through the last two years of construction aided by his longtime carpenter friend Oden Alrick from Knife River.

In 1992 Glenn Johnson was called to be the pastor and the congregation voted to be affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church.

Pastor Nathan Johnson was called as youth Pastor in 2001. In Nov 2005 Pastor Kevin Sich was called to lead our youth programs.

Intimacy with God produces a heart that is receptive to ministering to others and a desire to obey and please God. Love for God results in a love for people. The unity among Christians is the key factor to a church growing in spirit and in numbers.
